This session discuss a research work with many examples about various stages of development and how some of the seamless things and minimal efforts from parents could generate mathematical thinking. Do not wait the kid to learn basic mathematical concepts in school. It should come from mom, dad and surroundings.
July - date TBD
This seminar is meant to review the journey of school mathematics. If you work backward from Calculus, what are the key things you need or should not miss during the math learning from early school onwards. The attitude that "I can skip it now and learn later" impact student badly not only in math but also in other subjects. And this attitude create students who struggle to add mixed fractions in high school. If you fix a discipline in learning math , the other subjects will come much easier than you think. Additional threat in the early learning process is due to calculators impairing brain to skip crucial calculations practice. Math learning is at best when you learn using your fingers on paper, not fingers on the keyboard.
Aug - date TBD
Its an interesting discussion to agree who is the father of mathematics. Would you list the great mathematicians as below and take the one name that is oldest? Would you compare the contributions and see which was the most valuable contribution. Some contributions are more popular than others, for example Pythagoras is famous for every high school student and many middle school students because of the Pythagorean theorem we use for right triangles.
List of some of the great mathematicians:
ARYABHATA - 476 BC - 550AD
CARL GAUSS- 1777 - 1855
ARCHIMEDES - Died 212BC
LAPLACE- 1749
EULER - 1707
RAMANUJAN - 1887
PYTHAGORAS - 569 BC
BHASKARA II - 1114 - 1185
In the seminar titled "fathers of mathematics" , we look at contributions of great fathers in the field of mathematics as a motivation factor for further understanding as also a way to ignite young minds. Learning should not be limited to get grades in school. Historical aspects are often forgotten in school math learning.
Developing math skills using programming(Java Junior - a summer course): Students can learn java and python early on, as early as in middle school with solid pre-algebra skills. They seamlessly develop problem solving skills, error analysis, avoid making careless mistakes - java wont allow you to make a syntax error for example so you get careful in following the rules as well as using the right constructs.
