When we introduced a comparison of math learning with exploring an ocean, many wondered what it meant. It started in a summer 2014 "transitions to geometry" seminar while our students were involved in a visualization discussion as the high school geometry course has its visual and spatial reasoning aspects integrated. The core of math learning and understanding its uniqueness among all science subjects is the fact that it go wide as we go wide and go deep as we go deep. Means the student determine how wide or how deep he/she would like to go. School curriculum gives a guidance and required elements, a student is not in anyway restricted to learning within school curriculum boundaries.
Students get this opportunity to learn beyond school curriculum in the summer becasue time is on their side to support their interest within, on the subject. One of them came up with a 2D view of this fact right after the seminar:
Here is a listing of our transitions seminars that interested students can attend:
WWPMSEM-1 :Transitions from arithmetic to algebra
WWPMSEM-2: Transitions from algebraic thinking to visual aspects of geometry
WWPMSEM-3: Advancing from Algebra-1 to Algebra 2
